Hawk to be inducted today
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Advanced Jet Trainer Hawk will be formally inducted into the Indian Air Force at a function in Bidar, Karnataka, on Saturday. Defence Minister A. K. Antony will preside over the function.
The Hawks are replacing MiG-21s, which have high landing and take-off speeds that made them accident-prone in the hands of trainee pilots.
With the induction of the Hawks made by the BAE Systems, the IAF will be the 19th air force to use them for training frontline, fast jet pilots.
The BAE Systems had delivered eight aircraft to the IAF. The first jets arrived at the Air Force Station Bidar in November last.
The IAF will receive a total of 66 Hawks, 24 of which will be built by the BAE Systems in the U.K. and 42 by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in Bangalore.
The BAE Systems, in partnership with the Royal Air Force, has also provided a training programme that will see on its completion in the middle of this year, over 75 IAF pilots trained in a totally accident-free environment on the current RAF Hawk fleet at the RAF Valley.
