NEW DELHI: Ashok Vajpeyi has been appointed as pro-tem chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi with immediate effect. The appointment was made by the President on the recommendation of the Minister of Tourism and Culture. He will continue to hold the office till a regular chairman is appointed. An eminent Hindi poet and critic, Mr. Vajpeyi has served as Vice-Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi International Hindu University; chairman, Bharat Bhavan Trust; trustee, Indira Gandhi National Centre of the Arts; member, Indian Council of Cultural Relations, and executive board member of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. A leading poet and essay writer, Mr. Vajpeyi has a number of publications to his credit. He has won the Dayavati Modi Kavi Shekhar Samman, 1994, and the Sahitya Akademi Award. Meanwhile, this year’s coveted Sahitya Akademi Fellowship (Akademi Ratna) will be conferred on eminent scholar and professor of aesthetics S.K. Saxena. He will receive Rs. 1 lakh and a citation, an angavastram and a tamrapatra. President Pratibha Devisingh Patil will present the award to Dr. Saxena and 33 eminent persons with the Akademi Awards for the year 2007. The Akademi Awards carry Rs. 50,000 each, a citation, an angavastram and a tamrapatra.
