Lecture on life of JK
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: The central tenet of philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti that there was no divide between the East and the West formed the focal point of a lecture by Australian biographer Christine Williams as part of The Hindu Endowment on India Studies Lecture on Friday at the University of Madras.
Dr. Williams, who spoke on ‘Researching the life of Jiddu Krishnamurti’, said the philosopher influenced such theoretical titans as Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes.
Dr. Williams said she found a thick FBI file on the man who encouraged his followers to be “free from the known.” And, while some critics contend that his work is purposely evasive, he had a profound and lasting impact on world thought, including that of pioneer Carl Jung and the psychology of identity.
According to her, Australian and Indian writings shared similar themes, being post-colonial nations. “Environmental, indigenous and diaspora writing holds great relevance to both cultures. The students here in the English Department have been unusually hungry for Australian writers, and we should support such curiosity,” she said.
