Taxi drivers need to keep record of customers Law & order

A nearly clueless murder is cracked by a special team, says S. Vijay Kumar

It was a puzzling case. The body of a middle-aged man with two stab injuries was found dumped in shrubs along the National Highway near Vadipatti in Madurai district a fortnight ago.

The body was wrapped in a blanket and the man was wearing expensive clothes, including an imported shirt. The nearly clueless murder was cracked by a special team formed by the Superintendent of Police, T.S. Anbu.

Two teams went to Kodaikanal and Udhagamandalam in search of suspects as the blanket used to wrap the body was of the kind usually used in hill stations.

The first clue came from an eyewitness who claimed to have seen a Toyota Qualis car with Karnataka registration number parked near the scene of offence. Hours later, police received information that a similar vehicle was found abandoned near Andipatti in Theni district.

While investigation was on, a team from the Bangalore city police also arrived in search of the vehicle as a follow up to a man missing case.

According to police sources, the Bangalore police gave information that the car was hired by a group of youths belonging to different parts of Tamil Nadu. Further investigation revealed that they had murdered the driver en route with an intention to sell the vehicle.

They had also arranged for a buyer with the help of a car driver in Sholavandan.

However, one of the suspects withdrew from the conspiracy and returned to work. His arrest led to the unfolding of the chilling murder.

Police said the suspects acted friendly with the driver to win his confidence. At an isolated place near Vadipatti, one of them held him from behind, while two others stabbed his neck and chest resulting in his death almost instantaneously. They concealed the body in shrubs. While proceeding to Theni district to sell the vehicle, one of the accused turned hostile to the plan and withdrew. “They were all daily wage labourers working in Bangalore.

The search is still on for the prime suspect. We have arrested one of the accused from Kallakurichi. A driver who helped the gang to dispose of the body and sell the stolen vehicle has also been taken into custody,” Mr. Anbu said.

The police are taking steps to put in place a mechanism where taxi drivers can identify customers and maintain a record.

Gadgets such as Global Positioning System could be used to track the vehicles.

If need be, taxi operators could even take photographs of unknown customers with their consent, he added.
