Job scheme: over 70,000 enrolled

Women outnumber men

VIRUDHUNAGAR: A total of 70,722 persons of 11 panchayat unions in the district have enrolled themselves expressing interest to work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme.

Close to 50 per cent of the total registered workers come from the three panchayat unions of Kariapatti, Tiruchuzhi and Narikudi unions.

The registration has crossed five digits only in these three unions – Kariappati 10,227, Tiruchuzhi 11,411 and Narikudi 11,535.

A good number of people from Vembakotti and Virudhunagar unions have registered.

However, residents of Aruppukottai union are the least encouraged by the programme what with just 1,651, including 611 men, registering themselves to get employment opportunities.

The programme has not attracted many from the industrial belts of Sivakasi, Rajapalayam and Sattur.

“These areas offer regular employment and higher salary through match, printing, fireworks and textile industries,” said an official.

Women have outnumbered men in all unions except in Sivakasi and Narikudi. In Vembakottai, almost an equal number of men and women have registered.

Collector V. Chandrasekaran has asked the Commissioners of panchayat unions and presidents of respective panchayats to create awareness about the programme and increase the number of registration.

Every registered family will get employment opportunity for a minimum of 100 days in a year. No construction work can be taken up under the scheme. Contractors, middlemen and machinery would have no place in the programme.

Both men and women would get an equal wage of Rs.80 for seven-hour-work a day, said the Collector.
