Making a point: Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R.Baalu addressing a symposium on logistic management at the Madras Christian College in Tambaram on Friday. — TAMBARAM: A 19.2-km-long four-lane elevated road to link War Memorial near the State Secretariat and Madhuravoyal will be laid at a cost of Rs.1,500 crore, Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T. R. Baalu said on Friday. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi would be laying the foundation stone for the project shortly, Mr.Baalu said addressing a symposium on Logistics Management as part of ‘Comfest 2008’, organised by the Department of Commerce, Madras Christian College, Tambaram. The project is to facilitate speedier movement of cargo from Chennai port to different parts of Tamil Nadu . Among other major projects in Tamil Nadu, he said that remaining portion of work on the North-South Corridor would be finished by November, while pending works on the Golden Quadrilateral would be completed in one-and-a-half years. Efficient logistics, Mr. Baalu said, was crucial to achieve the targeted 10 per cent growth rate by the end of the XI Five-Year Plan . For quick, safe and cost-effective movement of goods, it was the responsibility of all government institutions to work in unison, he said. The National Maritime Development Programme has 387 projects for developing shipping and ports sectors. A total of 276 port projects are expected to be completed by 2012 and 111 Shipping projects by 2025. Fifty two of these projects were in Tamil Nadu and 14 of them in Chennai. Replying to queries on Sethusamudram project, Mr.Baalu said that six ships were currently working in Palk Strait and two more would be deployed soon. Work there would be completed as per schedule, Mr. Baalu said. Among others who spoke were Alandur Municipal Chairman R. S. Bharathi, college Principal V. J. Philip, and Head, Department of Commerce Charles Suresh David.
