Plea to lower deposit amount for sewer connections in Ullagaram
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: The Kancheepuram District (North) Congress Committee has appealed to Ullagaram – Puzhuthivakkam Municipality and the State Government to lower the deposit amount to be collected from residents for the proposed Rs.28-crore underground drainage network project.
In a statement, R. G. Bagat Singh, general secretary of the party’s district committee, and K. M. Yogarajan, president of the party’s Ullagaram town unit, said the local body’s council recently gave its approval to collect sums ranging between Rs.10,000 and Rs.20,000 (depending on the built-up area of houses) as deposit amount for the project.
Stating that a majority of the beneficiaries of the proposed project were middle-class, salaried sections and people belonging to economically weaker sections, Mr. Bagat Singh that paying the huge sum would be a severe burden on them. He said that in the neighbouring Alandur Municipality, the deposit amount ranged only between Rs.7,500 and Rs.10,000.
Charging huge sums as deposit amount would put the residents to hardship, they said.
P. A. Jayachandran, Municipal Chairman, said the charges were already fixed by the State Government and its funding agencies and that the local body could hardly intervene to bring it down.
Unlike Alandur Municipality, where a private company, too, was part of the project and invested a substantial amount, in Ullagaram, the bulk of the contribution was from the government, funding agencies and from residents, the beneficiaries, Mr. Jayachandran said.
