College student fatally hit by lorry

TAMBARAM: A third year engineering college student was killed on the spot after he was hit by a speeding lorry, which was on its way to the transport office for registration. The accident took place on Mount-Poonamallee Road in St. Thomas Mount on Friday morning.
John Premraj of Porur was a student at a private engineering college in Padur, Old Mamallapuram Road.
The police said that he used to travel by the college bus every day, but on Friday, he set out on his two-wheeler.
He was heading towards the Kathipara intersection when the lorry hit his bike from the back. Premraj came under the wheels of the vehicle and was killed on the spot.
Though he was wearing a helmet, it was smashed to pieces.
The accident took place at 7.30 a.m.
Soon after, the victim’s body was shifted to a pavement and covered with a piece of cloth.
But it took more than one hour for his body to be shifted in a mortuary van to the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital (Chromepet GH) for post-mortem.
The police said that the lorry driver was arrested. The St. Thomas Mount Police registered a case before transferring it to the Tambaram Traffic Police (Investigation).
