THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) has expressed concern over the campaign against the Church and Christian educational institutions in Kerala. In a statement issued after its recent meeting at Jamshedpur, the CBCI said the moves of the State government to impose legislative restrictions on the educational field amounted to denial of fundamental rights guaranteed to the minorities under the Constitution. In spite of the set backs on the key clauses of the self-financing colleges Act at every stage of judicial review, the government was going ahead with worse legislative steps. The new proposals of the Commission for Higher Education and the report of the committee to review the Kerala Education Rules were aimed at restricting the freedom of the minorities. It also said the ruling parties were indulging in propaganda against the church leaders and Christian educational institutions. “The CBCI affirms its solidarity with the church in Kerala in its struggle to protect the basic rights of minorities,” it said.
