‘3-member panel to assess regional backwardness’
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: The commission being contemplated by the Government to assess the backwardness of a region or district and bring them on a par with developed districts will have three members—an economist of the eminence of C. Rangarajan - a judge of the High Court or Supreme Court and a sociologist. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said the commission will be a constitutional body vested with powers to direct the Government to release special funds to the region or district found backward regions and develop them in a time frame of five years. Dr. Reddy who continued his reply to the debate on the Governor’s Address in the Legislative Council on Friday said a section of people think that justice could be rendered to a backward region only if a separate State was formed. But till the issue of forming Telangana was resolved by the Congress high command, the problem could be addressed by the commission.
