Collector asks villagers to register for rural employment scheme

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Collector, R. Kirlosh Kumar on Thursday asked the interested rural people to register immediately for getting employment under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

In a statement, he said that it would be implemented in all blocks of the district from 1st April. The primary objective of the scheme was to enhance the livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every household.

The works selected under the scheme will be executed through the respective village panchayats.

Mr. Kumar said men and women above 18 years were eligible to get employment under the scheme.

They should submit a written application or express their interest in person to the respective panchayat president to get employment under the scheme.

They would be given photo identity cards. Priority will be given for carrying out works such as water conservation, creation of new water harvesting structures, renovation of traditional water bodies including ponds, lakes and ooranis, removal of silt from water bodies and water carrying channels, strengthening of bunds, and flood control and protection works.

He said a team of officials of the District Rural Development Agency and panchayat presidents visited Vedasanthur in Dindigul district recently to know the implementation methods of the scheme.
