Collector warns against irregularities

Staff Reporter

At DPCs in Madurai district

“Criminal action will be taken”

“Commission being deducted”

MADURAI: Farmers complain that they are being fleeced up to Rs.25 a bag of paddy when they sell their produce at the State-run direct procurement centres (DPCs) in the district.

The Collector, S.S. Jawahar, has warned those involved in the irregularities with criminal action.

“Farmers are being forced to pay Rs. 17.50 a bag towards weighing and loading at the DPCs in Chellampatti and Nattarmangalam,” one of them said at the monthly farmers’ grievance day meeting held at the Collectorate on Friday. “It is Rs. 25 a bag a Kancharampettai,” said another.

While an official from the Tamil Nadu State Civil Supplies Corporation said that his colleagues were paying the entire amount due to farmers for their produce and it was only the loadmen who demanded money for their work. Several farmers alleged that the TNCSC bill clerks at the DPCs paid for the arrivals only after deducting a “commission.”

“Only because I questioned their irregularity, the officials paid me Rs. 25 less a bag alleging that the paddy had high moisture content,” a ryot said.

The local people employed to assist procuring officials at the DPCs are paid by the TNCSC 60 paise a bag for weighing and stitching and another 40 paise for loading.

Stating that this money was very meagre, farmers wanted the Government to increase their charges.

Stocks not cleared

Another farmer complained that the DPCs at Kottakudi, Tiruvadvur and Vellalur in Melur area were not procuring paddy because already procured stocks were not cleared from the centre.

The Collector came down heavily on the Cooperative Department, when a farmer complained that no jewel loan had been given through the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Bank at Narasingampatti due lack of sufficient staff.
