Protect tigers, PM tells CMs
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed concern over the decline in the tiger population and asked the Chief Ministers to personally oversee tiger conservation programmes.
Reviewing tiger conservation in the country, a week after the official census showed that the population had gone down by more than 50 per cent, Dr. Singh also took stock of the National Tiger Conservation Authority.
He will also convene a conference of the Chief Ministers with Tiger Reserves to put in place a coordinated response to the conservation challenge. Reiterating the government’s commitment to tiger conservation, he said the Centre would further raise financial and organisational support for such efforts.
