Commission to release films, radio spots on women empowerment

Thiruvananthapuram: The State Women’s Commission is releasing a series of documentaries, radio spots and short films that it has prepared as part of its awareness generation programmes for women empowerment. Minister for Health and Social Welfare P.K. Sreemathy will release the documentaries and films at Kalabhavan on February 25 at 2 p.m.

The documentaries have been prepared by the State Film Development Corporation and C-DIT. The short films will be telecast by the Doordarshan and the radio spots aired by All India Radio from next Friday, chairperson of the Commission D. Sreedevi told a press conference here on Thursday.

The documentaries filmed by the Commission focuses on issues such as domestic violence and the protection afforded to women by the Domestic Violence (Protection to Women) Act; extravagances of marriage ceremonies in Kerala; inter-State marriage racket, sexual exploitation and abuse of women. There are documentaries that detail the functions and the working of the Commission and the importance of setting up Jagratha Samithis at local levels to settle issues quickly.

The Commission had received Rs.50 lakh for organising awareness programmes, as part of the Government’s flagship programme. Out of this, Rs.20 lakh was utilised for making the documentaries and short films. Over 60 seminars and workshops on various issues pertaining to women’s welfare had been organised by the Commission in the past three months. Over 100 awareness programmes had also been organised in the last one year, Ms. Sreedevi said.

The International Women’s Day celebrations organised by the Commission will be held at Kozhikode. Seminars, folk art shows etc have also been planned. Women’s Day programmes will be organised on March 15 at VJT hall.
