HONOUR: Collector T.N. Venkatesh (second from left) presenting “Kalai” awards in Karur. KARUR: The Government Music School here will soon be functioning from its own premises, Collector T.N. Venkatesh said here recently. At a lecture-demonstration series held for students of government music schools, he said land near the upcoming stadium complex had been allotted for the purpose and efforts were on to raise a new building to house the music school there. He gave away “Kalai” awards for 2005-06 to budding and senior artistes. Bharatanatyam artiste K.J. Janani was conferred with ‘Kalai Ilamani’ title, while artist Gopinath was honoured with ‘Kalai Valarmani’ title. Bharatanatyam teacher Kalavathy Marimuthu was conferred with ‘Kalai Chudarmani title,’ Devaram exponent S. Balathandayutham ‘Kalai Nanmani’ and harmonium artiste Subramanian with ‘Kalai Muthumani.’ Assistant Director of Art and Culture R. Gunasekaran said students from government music schools in Karur, Tiruchi, Pudukkottai, Perambalur, Salem, Erode and Krishnagiri benefited from the lecture-demonstration series. This was the third time such a programme had been organised for the benefit of art students. Similar programmes were held in Tiruchi and Salem. Mr. Gunasekaran said the programme would help budding students imbue the intricacies of art forms such as Bharatanatyam, vocal, Devaram, nagaswaram and thavil. Over 400 students took part in the two-day exercise. Carnatic vocalist Sowmya spoke on kuralisai, while nagaswaram exponent Madurai M.P.N. Ponnusamy (of Thillana Mohanambal fame) enlightened the students on the nuances of the instrument. ‘Narthagi’ Natraj delineated the expert expressions in Bharatanatyam, while Devaram exponents Thirugnana Balachandar of Annamalai University and Madurai Pon Muthukumaran explained the higher concepts in rendering the hymns.
