KASARAGOD: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has demanded that the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) end meddling in the functioning of the Home Department and provide adequate freedom to the police to discharge its duties in an independent manner. He was inaugurating a public meeting of the United Democratic Front (UDF) at Palakkunnu, Uduma, in the district on Saturday. Mr. Chandy said instances of CPI (M) workers attacking police stations and freeing the alleged accused and interference by party leaders in police investigations had become a regular feature under the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. Referring to an earlier meeting of the UDF at Palakkunnu that had been vandalised by miscreants, Mr. Chandy said though the Inspector-General of Police had conducted an investigation into the violence there, the State government had not taken action on it. Instead of arresting the CPI(M) workers behind the violence, the police had registered cases against the UDF workers, he said. Functioning styleMr. Chandy said the functioning of the CPI(M) leadership was marked by intolerance. He alleged that the violence at the CPI(M) State conference at Kottayam was not because some workers had raised slogans in support of the UDF leaders. The CPI (M) leadership could not even tolerate slogans in support of the Chief Minister, Mr. Chandy said. The party should adopt a democratic style of functioning, he said. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala said the work of the State police was being carried out at the offices of the CPI(M). The police were not being allowed to discharge its duties independently, he said. The CPI(M) had destroyed the morale of the police force, he said. A large number of UDF workers from various parts of the district attended the meeting. A large police force was deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident.
