Jindal to launch work on alumina refinery soon
Staff Reporter
VISAKHAPATNAM: Civil works of the alumina refinery project will begin soon with the ‘bhoomi puja’ performed recently by the Jindal South West Aluminium Limited’s Project Head R.C. Swain at Dasulapalem junction near S. Kota.
Anticipating trouble from those opposing bauxite mining and the refinery project, heavy police bandobust was made by the district administration of Vizianagaram. While the environment clearance for the refinery was obtained sometime ago, the Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation is yet to get clearance from the Ministry of Mines as well as the Ministry of Environment and Forests for extracting bauxite ore from the agency areas of Anantagiri and Araku mandal.
The Telugu Desam and Left parties are on a warpath against the project even as the ruling Congress led by Minister for Housing B. Satyanarayana is leading a vigorous campaign in support of bauxite mining and refining promising jobs to the tribal youth.
However, the anti-mining protesters argue as to how refinery work could begin without obtaining clearance for mining. Another bauxite refinery project is coming up in Makavarapalem mandal of the district. It is promoted by the Government of Ras Al-Khaimah and a private cement factory.
