NEW DELHI: Bharat Sangeet Utsav 2008, a three-day festival of Indian classical music and dance organised by Carnatica Archival Centre for Music and Dance, was inaugurated here over the weekend at Delhi Tamil Sangam by Justice P. Sathasivam of the Supreme Court. Eminent musicians Neyveli Santana Gopalan and Sanjay Subramanian gave vocal recitals on the opening day. Speaking on the occasion, Justice Sathasivam highlighted the importance of music in every sphere of human life.

Essence of life

He underscored the presence of music in every activity including waves of ocean, movement of rivers and over the breath of living organisms. He said the role of music could be properly exploited for the advancement of society and curbing several social problemsHe called for more such events to be held regularly in the Capital to foster national integration and complimented Carnatica for organising the festival in Delhi.

Former CBI Director D. R. Karthikeyan traced the origin of music which was nearly 5,000 years old and described it as a great treasure of Indian civilisation. He attributed the development of music and dance to the ancient Vedas.

Carnatica Chairman and Additional Solicitor-General Mohan Parasaran explained the activities of the organisation and said it was planned to hold similar music festivals in other parts of the country.

Performances

On Saturday, Ashwini Bhide Deshpande, Carnatica Brothers K. N. Sashikiran and P. Ganesh; S. Sowmya and Grammy Award winner Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Salil Bhatt gave Carnatic and Hindustani music concerts. On Sunday, Rama Vaidyanathan will present a thematic dance performance, followed by music concerts of Gayathri Venkataraghavan, N. Vijaya Siva and Sanjeev Abhyankar.
