Cash awards for villages improving sex ratio

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government has decided to award Rs. 5 lakh to the village which stands first at the State level in improving the sex ratio, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda announced on Saturday.

Speaking at a legal literacy seminar on eradication of female foeticide and drug de-addiction organised by the Haryana State Legal Services Authority in collaboration with the Health Department at Fatehabad, Mr. Hooda said that Rs. 5 lakh would be given to the district securing the first position in improving the sex ratio while Rs. 3 lakh would be given to the district getting the second position and Rs. 2 lakh to the district adjudged third.

Mr. Hooda assured Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Vijender Jain that his regime would provide all possible help towards eradication of these social evils.

He disclosed that Kurukshetra and Ambala were included in the 34 districts of the country having a low sex ratio.

Thanks to persistent efforts of the Government the sex ratio in Haryana had improved considerably, he claimed.

Recounting the various steps taken by his government for empowerment of women, he honoured the village Panchayat of Jhalnia by giving Rs. 1 lakh for improving the sex ratio (1,227 females as against 1,000 males).

Mr. Justice Jain called upon the people, especially youth, to vow to eradicate female foeticide and de-addiction from society by launching a crusade and mass movement against these social evils.

Expressing concern over the “declining sex ratio in Haryana”, he urged the people to change their mind-set so that female foeticide could be checked effectively.
