A person in hospital under police custody being beaten up at Hajipur in Vaishali district of Bihar on Saturday. PATNA: A mob in Hajipur, district headquarters of Vaishali district in Bihar, on Saturday pulled out an alleged murderer from the custody of the police and beat him up. According to the police, roommates Ravi and Om Prakash had a quarrel when Ravi accused Om Prakash of stealing his mobile phone. The fight turned violent and Ravi allegedly stabbed Om Prakash which proved fatal. Local people handed over Ravi to the Pokhra police station and he was then admitted to the Hajipur Sadar hospital for treatment. As word spread about Om Prakash’s death, his relatives and friends rushed to the hospital and dragged out the handcuffed Ravi and thrashed him as the police looked on helplessly. Out of danger Ravi has since been admitted to the Patna Medical College Hospital where his condition is said to be out of danger. The district police have suspended a policeman for dereliction of duty. Last week, a man charged with theft was lynched in Sadhullahpur village of Vaishali district. In September, 10 tribals were done to death in Delhpurwa village of the same district. At least four persons have been done to death in incidents of vigilantism in less than 10 days in the State.
