The ‘Queen Coris’ THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is a new inmate at the marine aquarium established by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) at Vizhinjam. The ‘Queen Coris’ belongs to the group of Wrasses. The fish, collected from the Bay of Bengal, is about 20 cm long. The Queen Coris is a prized asset in the international market for ornamental fishes, commanding a price of up to Rs.5,000. The fish is marked by an orange-coloured head. The lower part of the body is dark brown. There are three large vertically elongated, broadly black-edged white spots on the dorsal part of the body. While the adults of the species inhabit weed, rock and coral areas in the sea, juveniles are found in shallow tide pools. It feeds mainly on hard-shelled prey including crustaceans, molluscs and sea urchins. Natural habitat includes the Western Indian Ocean and the Southern Red Sea.
