dated February 25, 1958: Syria-Egypt merger

Prime Minister Nehru considers the recent merger of Syria and Egypt as a positive step towards Arab unity. The Prime Minister is stated to have referred to reports from Cairo that more than 7,400,000 voters in Egypt and Syria had approved the merger of the two countries in a nation-wide plebiscite and had elected Mr. Nasser to the presidency in a record turn-out. This, it is understood, was considered a very “welcome development” by the Prime Minister and members of the Working Committee. He is understood to have told the Working Committee that India was strongly in favour of holding a “summit conference” for finding ways and means of relaxing international tension. He was reported to have said that there was no question of India taking part in such a conference unless she was invited to do so. In fact, he added, there was an increasing demand for such a conference as it was felt that it could help in finding a solution to the international problems. He also touched briefly on the imperative need for disarmament.
