Rs.9.8 lakh-aid disbursed to reformed offenders

TIRUVANNAMALAI: Collector Satyabrata Sahoo distributed rehabilitation assistance to the tune of Rs.9.8 lakh to 67 former prohibition offenders who had been reformed, at a function held here on Wednesday.

Mr. Sahoo said that the government had sanctioned Rs.10 lakh to Tiruvannamalai district for the rehabilitation of such persons. At the function Wednesday, 62 were given loans at the rate of Rs.15,000 each for the purchase of milch animals, while five were given a loan of Rs.10000 each for purchase of goats. This assistance would go a long way in enabling the former offenders to earn an income through dignified livelihood means and dissuading them from switching back to illegal activities such as illicit distillation and selling of illicit arrack, he said.

The beneficiaries would enjoy a three-month repayment holiday and they should start repaying the loan at the rate of Rs.250 a month from the fourth month onwards.

Mr. Sahoo appealed to the beneficiaries to utilise the loan and improve their living conditions without going back to wrong path.

V. Balakrishnan, Superintendent of Police, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnamoorthy, Additional SP (prohibition enforcement wing), R. Ranganathan, Assistant Commissioner of Excise, and A. Natarajan, District Excise Officer, participated in the function.
