‘Deve Gowda’s statement has demoralised the police’

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former minister Ramachandra Gowda on Sunday alleged that the former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda’s statement — that poverty and unemployment are the root cause for the youth taking to terrorism — has demoralised the police force which has exposed the alleged link of terrorists with the State. In an open letter to the former Prime Minister, copies of which were released to the press on Sunday, the BJP leader said such a statement had boosted the morale of those forces which are inimical to the country.

The former Prime Minister had been proved wrong with the arrest of a well-qualified and well paid techie on the charge of being an activist of the Students Islamic Movement of India, an organisation which had been banned by the Union Government, he said.

The BJP leader urged Mr. Deve Gowda to refrain from making statements, either in favour or against the suspected terrorists. “Let the law take its own course. Let us not do anything that amounts to interference in the day-to-day functioning of the police,” he said.
