BANGALORE: Inmates of Bangalore Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara henceforth will not have to go all the way to Government Dental College for problems related to their teeth. The Prison Department is starting dental treatment facility in the Central Prison’s Hospital from Tuesday. According to Additional Director-General of Police (Prisons) S.T. Ramesh, the new facility will help the inmates in filling cavities, cleaning, undergo root canal treatment and other dental problems. “There is a great demand for this facility,” Mr. Ramesh told The Hindu on Sunday. Opening the dental check-up facility is a part of the initiative of the Prisons Department to address the issue of oral hygiene of the inmates, which, he said, was very poor. “Inmates are regularly taken to the Government Dental College for check-up. With the lack of police escorts, we are not able to send all the inmates,” he said. The Government has approved the installation of two dental chairs in the Prison Hospital. The two chairs will have the accessories. Two doctors from Government Dental College will be attending to the problems of the inmates twice a week, he said. The college will be sending its mobile van to take X-rays of the teeth once a week. Adviser to the Governor P.K.H. Tharakan will inaugurate the new facility.
