26 killed in road accidents across Andhra Pradesh

Staff Reporter

ADILABAD: Sixteen persons, including four children and five women, were killed and eight others were injured seriously in a ghastly road accident on Sunday involving a private passenger jeep and a chilli-laden lorry. The accident, which was attributed to the bad condition of the road, occurred near Bandam village on NH 7 in Neredigonda mandal that is known as an accident-prone spot.

Only 10 of the 16 were identified until evening. Six of the severely injured were shifted to Hyderabad, while the remaining two were sent to hospitals in Nizamabad.

According to eyewitness reports at the accident site, the lorry that was proceeding towards Neredigonda was speeding on the right side apparently because of the road being in bad shape on the left. The jeep with 24 passengers was coming from the opposite direction.

The jeep driver perhaps got confused on finding the lorry coming in the wrong lane and he too followed suit. However, the lorry driver who evidently wanted to correct his course hit the jeep that was now coming from the wrong side.

The impact of the collision was entirely on the left flank of the jeep that resulted in instant death of a dozen of the ill-fated passengers. The lorry toppled to its side following the collision.

Six feared dead

Vizag Staff Reporter writes: Six persons were feared killed and more than 35 injured when a van fell into a valley near Darakonda in the agency area of the district on Sunday afternoon. More than 40 Girijans from Orissa were returning from a marriage at Satyavaram in Chintapalli mandal by the van. When the driver lost control of the vehicle on the ghat road, it fell into the valley about 800 metres below.

The accident occurred when a speeding lorry hit the autorickshaw, in which they were going to Vattigudipadu village from Nuzvid.
