Historic opportunity

This refers to the editorial “Democratic breakthrough” (Feb. 23). The people of Pakistan have provided a historic opportunity to the nation’s leaders to erase the black era of military rule and rewrite the chapter on democracy. It is up to the leaders to demonstrate to the world that they will not allow the military to influence the civilian government. The PPP and the PML(N) should resist the pressure exerted by the Bush administration on Islamabad in the name of combating global terror.

K. Ramachandran,

Madurai

Their cause and enemy being common, the erstwhile arch rivals have wisely chosen to sink their differences and join hands to form the national and provincial governments. The leaders of the PPP and the PML(N) should do their best to restore democracy and the rule of law in Pakistan besides ensuring its economic progress.

Peaceful co-existence with close neighbours being a pre-requisite for the prosperity of a region, every Indian is genuinely interested in the well-being of Pakistan.

K.D. Viswanaathan,

Coimbatore
