COLOMBO: Amid claims by the military that dozens of LTTE cadre have been killed along the Forward Defence Lines (FDLs) in the north, two political activists of Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikkal (TMVP) were killed in a suicide blast carried out by suspected LTTE cadre in Batticaloa on Sunday. The local bodies’ election to the Batticaloa district are due on March 10 and the TMVP is one of the main contestants. As per TMVP spokesperson Asad Mawulana, the victims were canvassing for the Tamil political party when they were attacked. Mr. Mawulana said the TMVP members had approached an individual loitering in the area to enquire his antecedents. The TMVP had organised a public meeting at Kalavanchchikudi, which a few TMVP candidates were due to attend. In another development V. Anandasangaree, president, Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), in a statement said the bombing of the Sea Tiger base at Kiranchi which resulted in “civilian casualties” was deplorable. The TULF leader said the LTTE could descend to any level but the government forces should not behave like them.
