Lucknow: Prisoners in the district jail here on Sunday went on an indefinite hunger strike in protest against the alleged lathicharge on them, in which some inmates suffered injuries. Senior officials were trying to persuade the prisoners to end the strike. Prisoners in the jail had fought a pitched battle with the guards on Saturday in which several prisoners were injured, sources said. The clash erupted when some jail guards allegedly tried to extort money from the prisoners. One of the inmates was admitted to the Balrampur hospital in the city, they said. Police personnel in strength had been deployed in and around the jail. — PTI
