Four-laning work gains momentum

Staff Reporter

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Around 65 per cent of the four-laning work on National Highway-7 (Madurai-Tirunelveli stretch) was completed and the project was scheduled to be over by October, the Collector V. Chandrasekaran has said.

Speaking at the coordination committee meeting of the four-laning project in the district here on Saturday, the Collector said 52 km of the road was being widened at a cost of Rs. 220 crore.

The work for constructing two road over-bridges at Virudhunagar and Thulukkapatti was under way. This road passed through Virudhunagar and Sattur taluks.

Another four-laning project on National Highway-45B, connecting Madurai and Tuticorin via Kariyapatti and Aruppukottai for 46 km in the district was underway at a cost of Rs. 225 crore.

An ROB work at Aruppukottai would begin soon. The Collector said that 30 per cent of the bypass laying work at Pandalkudi, Kariyapatti and Kalkurichi had been completed.

This project was scheduled to be completed by December 2009.

A total of 6.37 lakh square metre of land had been acquired at a cost of Rs. 25.27 crore for the work.

The Collector said that prompt payment was being made to landlords whenever land was acquired for the project.

Pipeline work

Stating that national highways could not be dug up frequently for drinking water pipeline repair works, the Collector urged the officials to use quality materials wherever re-alignment of pipelines were required during the implementation of four-laning works.

Mr. Chandrasekaran said that vehicles carrying heavy cargo were using the highways and hence asked the officials to ensure that the new bridges were constructed giving sufficient room for these vehicles.

District Revenue Officer S. Malarvizhi, Special DRO (NH) S. Palanichamy and Deputy Project Director (NH) Manivannan were among those who participated in the meeting.
