Common man against bifurcation, claims SVU professor

Concentration of power in hands of few worrisome

People yearning for participation in ruling of the State

KURNOOL: Division of State would not help in ending backwardness, said experts at a seminar held on ‘Unified Andhra- Development of Rayalaseema’, here on Sunday.

K.M. Setty, professor of Philosophy at SV University, said the power hungry and disgruntled political elements were raising the issue of separate statehood. Prof. Setty said he had extensively toured the State and interacted with common people and experts at eight universities on the issue. The information gathered by him supported the idea that the common man was not for division of state.

On the other hand, various sections were concerned about concentration of power in the hands of a few sections. More than the development, people were yearning for participation in the ruling of the State. No development or division of State would please the aggrieved sections. The vested interests should realise that the solution offered by them though division of State would not please the aggrieved sections, he said.

Prof. Setty said out of 90 backward class communities only people of 18 communities were able to get three square meals a day. Out of 38 communities under BC ‘A’ categories, people of 33 communities still lived on begging.

Inequalities

P. Ranga Reddy, Professor of Economics at SV University, said the government should take urgent steps to remove inequalities among regions if the State had to remain united. He said effective utilisation of resources and quality education to all would lead to progress and prosperity of the State. He called upon experts to highlight the plight of Rayalaseema saying the region was more backward than Telangana.
