The project will use water from Hogenakkal River Samiti seeks Centre’s intervention CHAMARAJANAGAR: Conservator of Forests, Chamarajanagar Circle, Nagaraj has said that the issue of Tamil Nadu taking up a Rs. 1,340-crore development project near Hogenakkal Falls has been brought to the notice of the State Government. Members of the Hogenakkal Ulisi Horata Samiti have threatened to thwartthe plan to lay the foundation stone on February 26. Mr. Nagaraj was addressing presspersons here on Sunday after a meeting with samiti members. The proposed drinking water project will utilise water from Hogenakkal River. He said the matter had also been brought to the notice of Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Avani Kumar Verma and Principal Secretary (Irrigation). Mr. Nagaraj said the Superintendent of Police had been asked to deploy police personnel on the island. Earlier, the samiti members held a discussion with Mr. Nagaraj along with Deputy Conservator of Forests (Chamarajanagar-Wildlife) Raju and Deputy Conservator of Forests (Kanakapura) Gitanjali urging them to bring the matter to the notice of the State Government. President of the samiti Puttaraje Urs said that according to the Forest Department nearly 55 per cent of the area at Hogenakkal belonged to Karnataka. He urged the Forest Department to take up all development works on Hogenakkal island and open the forest checkpost in Palar forest limits. Mr. Urs said the samiti members would like to hoist the Kannada flag at Hogenakkal Falls on February 26. They urged the Union Government to direct Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi not to go ahead with the project. The members alleged that the Tamil Nadu Government had violated its assurance of maintaining status quo until the joint survey was completed. They criticised the Tamil Nadu Government for not bringing the project to the notice of the Cauvery Tribunal, State Government and Union Government. The samiti has urged Governor Rameshwar Thakur to take steps to stop the projects.
