Entry of corporate chains will hit small retailers, says jagran manch convener

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: By subscribing to conditions imposed by globalisation, the Government will have to withdraw from several key sectors, B.M. Kumaraswamy, State convener of Swadeshi Jagran Manch, has said.

He was speaking at a discussion on the entry of corporate companies into the retail sector, organised by the manch here on Sunday.

“According to the National Crime Records Bureau, nearly 1.5 lakh farmers committed suicide between 1997 and 2005. And these are just farmers who had land in their names.

If nine years of opening the economy can do this to the country, then it is time to realise that the process of globalisation is not suitable for a country like ours.”

“Our economy has evolved over hundreds of years. It is not about mass production but production by the masses. We have a system where production is on a small scale. This is why we need development that results in creation of job opportunities,” he said.

Stating that nearly four crore people across the country are small-time proprietors and in low-investment partnerships, Mr. Kumaraswamy said that allowing corporate companies in the retail sector would adversely affect those running business without government assistance.
