NEW DELHI: In spite of the several drives launched by the Delhi police to make people aware of the repercussions of drunken driving, tragic accidents like the one near India Gate on Sunday in which two students lost their lives keep happening on the Capital roads. About 10 days ago, a labourer was killed and another injured when a vehicle driven by a young man allegedly in an inebriated state hit them at a Metro construction site in Preet Vihar. The accused was on his way to Ghaziabad after attending a marriage function when the accident took place. About a month ago, four young men from Pandav Nagar were drowned at New Ashok Nagar when a Maruti Alto car they were travelling in plunged into the river. While investigations in the case are on, the police suspect that it was also a case of drunken driving and that three of the occupants had consumed liquor. Pubs targetedTo check drunken driving, the police of various districts in association with the traffic police recently initiated a drive to keep a close watch on those coming out of pubs. The drive was started in South-West and South Delhi and pubs located at Vasant Lok and Greater Kailash were targeted. “We noticed that despite orders that pubs and restaurants must close by 1 a.m., owners were flouting the rules. Hence, we decided to keep the pubs in these areas under check,” said a senior police officer. As part of the drive that is carried out mainly on weekends, the local police ensure that pubs are shut down on time. For their part, the traffic police personnel armed with breath-analysers are deployed on roads leading to the pubs. They check if motorists are driving in an inebriated state. Besides posters warning people against drunken driving have been pasted in the pubs. “The traffic police have informed us that there has been a gradual decline in incidents of drunken driving in these areas. It is a good sign and we are hoping that this endeavour will help save more lives,” said the police officer.
