TAMBARAM: Chennai has been made the headquarters of Indian Medical Association’s College of General Practice. The shifting of the headquarters from the national capital was part of efforts taken by the top brass of the IMA to “decentralise and devolve” its sub-functions to give the IMA a national character. Keeping in line with this policy, the IMA’s Academy of Medical Specialities was shifted to Hyderabad and its Social Securities chapter’s headquarters to Ahmedabad, office-bearers of the Tamil Nadu unit of IMA told The Hindu. The Journal of IMA continued to be based in Kolkata. On the significance of Chennai becoming the national headquarters, G. Raghavelu, honorary secretary of CGP-IMA, said it would allow greater regional representation. Considering that a majority of general practitioners (also called family physicians) served patients in rural areas, the CGP aimed at improving health care delivery, Dr. (Capt) Raghavelu said. Educating general practitioners, issuing certificates after stringent quality control measures that included examinations, conducting short-term certificate courses to improve quality of treatment and publishing books were some of the programmes they had planned, he said.
