Promote neighbourhood school education system, says PMK

Staff Reporter

Ramadoss urges State government to promulgate ordinance

KANCHEEPURAM: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss on Sunday urged the State Government to promulgate an ordinance to introduce the neighbourhood system in school education.

He was addressing a function organised at a school in Chengalpattu to mark the distribution of equipment to 132 elementary and middle schools in the Chengalpattu Assembly Segment.

Claiming that the system would solve the problem of students travelling long distances to reach their institutions, Dr. Ramadoss said it would provide an opportunity for children living in the same area to study together in the same school.

A common school curriculum should be introduced, covering students in both urban or rural areas.

Education up to at least the middle school level should be free.

Against homework

Stating that reforms aimed at providing compulsory, free and quality education to school children would lay a strong platform for the younger generation to acquire wisdom, Dr. Ramadoss said he had recommended Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to set up a separate Department for Primary Education.

Demanding that the practice of giving students homework be wiped out, he said children should be allowed to play sports of their choice during evening hours.

He called upon parents and teachers to desist from putting students on a rigorous tuition schedule.

Earlier, Dr. Ramadoss went round the stalls where materials received as donations from the public and philanthropists were kept on display and interacted with students. Chengalpattu MP A.K. Moorthy, Chengalpattu MLA K. Arumugam, Kancheepuram MLA Sakthi Kamalammal and Education and Revenue Department officials participated.
