IOB wins crucial match

Chennai: Defending champion Indian Overseas Bank won a crucial Pool ‘A’ encounter against former winner Southern Railway ‘A’ by the odd goal in five in the senior division hockey league championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Sunday. This was Southern’s first reverse in seven matches. IOB increased its tally to 12 points from four matches.

Interestingly, it was Southern that struck first midway through the first half when Jayakumar sounded the boards. But IOB rallied quickly netting the equaliser through Felix.

A penalty corner by L. Anandan put IOB ahead and minutes later another penalty corner by Muthu Selvan increased the lead.

In the closing minutes Laxman Karan reduced the margin. In the morning, Central Excise and YMCA figured in a 2-2 draw. Satish and Shalin Sathya scored for YMCA, while Vijay and Ravikumar netted for Central Excise. SAI ‘A’ secured a walk over from State Bank after the latter failed to turn up.

St. Joseph’s triumphs

Host St. Joseph’s College of Engineering cornered both the men’s and women’s championships with 24 and 25 points respectively in the inter-collegiate sports festival (Jets 2008) on Sunday. MOP Vaishnav won the tennis championships for women.
