CHENNAI: SBI notched up a significant win, a 2-1 effort over AG’s Office on Sunday, which will help the side retain its berth in the CFA senior division league. SBI had gone into this match with the clear objective of not losing because with nine points and two matches to go, the team was precariously placed. The win has proved to be a lifeline but it was earned not without going through anxious moments. For it was AG’s which went into the lead thanks to Muthu’s enterprise in the fourth minute when he ran in from the right and his sheer speed created confusion in the SBI goal. Goalkeeper Sharath rushed out but the ball struck his body and rolled into the net. But the ageing AG’s team found it difficult to keep the young SBI brigade under check. In the 24th minute Sudhakar from the far side came up with a beautiful goal to equalise. Maintaining pressure, the hardworking Riju scored SBI’s winner in the 56th minute. Much of the credit for SBI’s win should go to its goalkeeper Sharath, whose assured collection and interceptions, formed a feature of the match. AG’s is on eight points with two matches to go. Earlier in the first division, Southern Railway completed its engagements with a 7-2 win over Octopus Marine. With 22 points Railway is now assured of a place in the senior division next season. Bharath (five), Rajesh Raja and Rajesh scored for the winner, while Vengadesan netted both the goals for Octopus.
