Reforms that fail to take off Law & order

Traffic reforms in the city have more often been a failure, says Anand Haridas

The city police are often at a loss how to implement traffic reforms. In the latest incident, they beat a hasty retreat after trying out a reform along North overbridge.

The police tried to divert light vehicles from Kacheripadi to take St. Benedict Road and reach Town Hall junction along Paramara Road and take the side track of the North Bridge. Heavy vehicles were to take the straight route from Kacheripadi to North Overbridge. According to the existing plan, heavy vehicles were diverted from Kacheripadi, while light vehicles were to proceed straight. The reason cited for the reform was that the original arrangement caused traffic snarls at the Town Hall junction and with lighter vehicles diverted along the side road, this could be solved. However, the reform had to be dropped after a day of worse traffic snarls and confusion.

Similarly, the police took up a drive to ensure safety of private vehicles carrying children to school after the death of a school student recently, as she fell from the vehicle. The drive to implement strictly the restriction on number of children did not take off, as the officials soon faced opposition from the parents. “With no other go, we have decided to book drivers of autorickshaws and other vehicles carrying too many children,” said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner.

The police have tried to streamline the autorickshaw service. Even officials of the Department of Legal Metrology are involved in it..

While the police are stepping up the drive against erring missing documents, the drive to systematically study the requirement of autorickshaws in the city and issue city permits accordingly is hanging fire.
