Herbal garden set up in school premises

PUDUCHERRY: It was a fruitful experience for a large number of students, as they learnt the ways of conserving biodiversity through field visits and experiments.

Rallies, competitions and planting of saplings marked the National Environmental Awareness campaign held recently.

At the Government Girls Middle School, Veerarveli, near here, scores of events threw light on the importance of protecting the environment. A rally to create awareness on biodiversity conservation was held. Pamphlets were distributed to the public during the rally.

Essay and painting competitions were organised for the students. They were exposed to the ways of learning to collect information on biodiversity through a field visit to the Botanical Garden here.

An herbal garden was set up in the school premises and a talk on herbal plants held. Cultural events including drama, dance and songs were part of the biodiversity conservation campaign, organised by the State Training Centre, Directorate of School Education along with the CPR Environmental Education Centre, Chennai.

In keeping with their ‘greenery’ efforts, Suseela Bai Government Girls Higher Secondary School has taken up the responsibility of maintaining trees from Ambalathadaiyar Madam Street to Sanakaradas Street during the three-day awareness campaign.

School students have been maintaining saplings planted on either sides of Vaisiyal Street and Aurobindo Street for the last four years.
