Flying fingers: An artisan demonstrates her skills at an handicrafts exhibition being organised by the Gujarati Emporium in Thiruvananthapuram.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Demonstrations of the warp and weft of traditional Gujarati handicrafts at the ongoing exhibition of handicrafts and handloom products from that state at the Jawahar Bal Bhavan is drawing crowds.

For those who love sporting jewellery the pick would be from among white metal ornaments for women; chains, studs and lockets made from precious and semi-precious stone from Jaipur; bangles with Australian diamonds and ornaments made out of emerald and covered with 22 carat gold.

For those who flaunt good vestures, the exhibition offers cotton/silk sarees and dress material with traditional Gujarati block, bathic, katch, vegetable, bandhini, printed and brush work.

Then there are the gaghra-cholis, tie and dye salwar sets (including shawls) and the chanya-choli of Jaipur for children.

The exhibition also features bed spreads with applique embroidery work, cushion covers, wall hangings, pictures and statues in wood, brass, black metal and white metal.

The exhibition also has on offer ‘special’ items such a chanapatna toys, utensils for pooja, equipment for acupressure treatment, wooden needles, chiken-worked kurthas, Lucknow sarees and terracotta products from Kolkota and Gorakhpur. The organisers have also arranged Gujarati puppet shows to the accompaniment of indigenous music.

Rebate

There is a 20 per cent rebate on handlooms and 10 per cent, on handicraft items. The exhibition will come to a close on February 27, a press note issued here said.
