NSS can help increase literacy: Tharakan

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The problems of the country, such as poverty, illiteracy and corruption could be eradicated through the National Service Scheme, adviser to the Governor P.K.H. Tharakan has said.

He was speaking at the annual NSS award presentation (2005-06 and 2006-07) function organised by the Department of Youth Services here on Monday.

Vocational schemes such as NSS had been gaining importance in the nation building process, he said. In that context, NSS students could play a major role in spreading literacy, as it had the potential to eradicate poverty and contain corruption. They could play an instrumental role in reducing traffic problems by educating people on traffic norms to be observed, and also help traffic police in the overall interest of the public, Mr. Tharakan added.

Emphasising the necessity of discipline in the development of individual and society, he said that national schemes such as NSS could help students serve the cause of society with dedication.

There were over 225,000 NSS students across the State. If every student could make two persons in a year literate, the number of literates in the State would increase by another 4.5 lakh, said NSS officer H.S. Suresh. The Government had already proposed a scheme to that effect as an incentive to the NSS students, he said.

Kuvempu University and Mangalore University bagged the best NSS university awards for 2005-06 and 2006-07 respectively. The vice-chancellors of the universities Prof. Sherigar and Prof. Kaverappa respectively, were present on the occasion.

Twelve awards in the category of best NSS colleges, best NSS programmes and best NSS volunteers for both the years were presented.
