Interest-free loans for the poor

Staff Reporter

NILAMBUR: An interest-free financial support scheme at Varikkal in Karulai panchayat near here celebrated its seventh anniversary last week.

The project called PRVP — the Malayalam abbreviation of ‘Palisa-Rahita Vaipa Paddhati’ — covers 670 poor families of Varikkal and its vicinity. Set up by the local units of the Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS) and its student wing, Kerala State Sunni Students Federation (SSF), the PRVP offers loans between Rs.100 and Rs.500 to members of all communities.

“We do not distinguish between Hindu, Muslim and Christian,” said Jamal Karulai, the coordinator of the scheme.
