600-odd persons attend free heart and chest super-specialty medical camp Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, to lead a free eye treatment camp on Tuesday NILAMBUR: The ongoing Bharat Nirman public information campaign organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Union government here is attracting a wide audience. A free heart and chest super-specialty medical camp held at O.C.K. auditorium here on Monday drew 600-odd patients from different parts of Nilambur. The camp was conducted by the National Rural Health Mission, Malappuram, in association with the Indian Medical Association and the Rotary Club, Nilambur. The Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti and Moulana Hospital, Perinthalmanna, also supported the camp. A seminar highlighting various facets of rural development also marked the PIB campaign on Monday. P. Radhakrishnan, public relations officer of Biotech, Thiruvananthapuram, made a presentation on waste management and biogas making. V.P. Gopinathan, district development officer of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), explained the role of NABARD in rural infrastructure development. N.M. Usman, field officer of Spices Board, Wayanad, made a presentation on organic farming. Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, will lead a free eye treatment camp here on Tuesday. A quiz competition for students of class IX and XI will be held. The District Medical Officer will lead a seminar on health awareness, which will be followed by a session in which HIV-positive persons will share their life experience with the audience. Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed inaugurated the campaign earlier on Sunday. The five-day campaign is being held with the cooperation of Central media organisations such as the Directorate of Field Publicity, Films Division, All India Radio, Doordarshan, Publications Division, Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity and Song and Drama Division. During his inaugural speech, Mr. Ahamed said the government had formulated schemes such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act for the well-being of the rural population. He said it would help solve the problem of unemployment in the rural areas to a great extent. P.V. Abdul Wahab, MP, presided over the inaugural function. Aryadan Mohammed, MLA; M.C. Mohandas, District Collector; among others offered felicitations.
