Family’s suicide attempt stalled
Special Correspondent
The man could not get government aid to treat his daughter, a cancer patient
VILLUPURAM: Six of a family attempted immolation in front of the Collectorate here on Monday. However, the police intervened and stopped their attempt.
According to the police, T. Govindan (45), a daily-wage worker at Otteripalayam in the Valavanur block, his three daughters and two sons assembled at the Collectorate and doused themselves with kerosene. Mr. Govindan’s second daughter Thangamalar (20) had been suffering from cancer. As he could not meet the medical expenses, he had sought government aid. However, his efforts over the last two years had failed. Vexed by the “indifference of the officials,” Mr. Govindan decided to end his life along with his family.
