BIDAR: Members of various Dalit associations of Bidar staged a “rail roko” at the city railway station on Monday condemning the Union Government’s decision to make 60 per cent marks mandatory for students in the Scheduled Castes (SC) category to get scholarship. The Nanded-Bangalore Express was stopped by them. In a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the members said that the new conditions laid down for SC students to avail themselves of post-Matric scholarships would deprive many of good educational opportunities. DiscriminationOwing to poverty, caste discrimination and illiteracy, education had been inaccessible to many in the SC category, he said. A majority of the SC students hailed from rural areas and lacked exposure to quality education.
