Congress wing seeks more seats to BCs in Assembly polls

Correspondent

Conferences of BCs will be held in all districts: Umashri

CHIKMAGALUR: Umashri, MLC and Chairperson of the backward classes wing of the Congress, said on Monday that the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) had been urged to provide more seats for backward classes in the coming elections to the legislative Assembly.

Addressing presspersons here, Ms. Umashri stressed the need to provide representation to small communities among the backward classes.

Denying that her party had neglected the backward classes and reiterating that they had never opposed internal reservation, she said the high command had been urged to prefer at least two candidates from the backward classes in each district.

She said the Congress had plans to organise conferences of the backward classes in various districts. Conferences in Hassan and Chikmagalur districts would be held next month.

She said health check-up camps would be held during the conferences.

A handbook containing guidelines on various programmes introduced by the Government for the welfare of the backward classes would be released during the conference in Chikmagalur to be held after March 20. Ms. Umashri, who presided over a meeting of representatives of the backward classes in the district to make preparations for the conference, said that presidents of district units of the backward classes wing of her party would be appointed soon.

K.B. Mallikarjun and D.L. Vijay Kumar, president, and general secretary of the Chikmagalur Congress Committee were present.
