Rural talents come to fore at sports competitions

CUDDALORE: Sports talent in the rural areas came under limelight during the district-level events conducted at Anna Stadium here in the past two days, thanks the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam (AGAMT) .

Sports facilities have been created at 136 centres, including in 15 schools, in the panchayats at the cost of Rs. 14.35 crore in Cuddalore district.

To encourage the students and those in various walks of life to participate in sports, union-level and block-level events were conducted earlier.

Those selected in Sunday’s events would participate in the State-level meet. Parangipettai has bagged the overall championship. The winners are as follows: Boys volleyball - B.Mutlur and Thiruthuraiyur; Kabadi – Kanur and Naduveerapattu; 800-metre – Periya Thambi of Periyakattupalayam and Raju of Thiruthuraiyur.

Long jump – Vijayababu and R.Ramesh, both from B.Mutlur; Shotput – Udhyakumar of Thiruthuraiyur and R.Ponkumar of B.Mutlur.

Girls vollyeball – B. Mutlur and Velangipattu; Kabadi – Mangalore; 800-metre – R.Bhagyalakshmi of Kattupalayam and Tamilmani of Thiruthuraiyur,

Long jump – Anbarasi of Kudiyeruppu and Nithya of Thiruthuraiyur; Shotput – Muthalammal and Hema of Velankipattu.

Collector Rajendra Ratnoo gave away prizes to the winners.

The participants said that but for the creation of sports facilities, they would not have realised their potential. In many villages and even in schools, there were no playgrounds earlier. But with the launching of the AGAMT, this lacunae was rectified.

The officials, who conducted the events, said that many participants had the potential as well as the urge to win the State-level events.
