New textbooks for classes 1, 3, 5, 7

KOCHI: The Curriculum Reforms Committee on Monday accepted a proposal to introduce new textbooks for Classes 1, 3, 5 and 7 from this June onwards.

The draft on Kerala Curriculum Framework had earlier recommended new textbooks in these classes.

M.A. Khader, Director, SCERT, said that an action plan would be drawn up soon to implement the proposal. New textbooks would be made available in June itself.

Dr. Khader said that the textbooks would be divided into first and second sections. The aim was to reduce the weight of schoolbags.

The grading system would continue in next academic year. The committee also voiced support for continuous evaluation of students.

There would be changes in the proposed adolescent education programme. The book on adolescent education, introduced earlier, was aimed at providing guidelines to the teachers.

Suggestions evolved through discussions on the topic would be included in the new curriculum. More discussions would be held before finalising the proposals. Teachers could seek the services of doctors and counsellors, if they find it difficult to explain certain sections in the adolescent education programme.

There would be no change in the school timings. The duration of a period would be one hour.

Education Minister M.A. Baby, Education Department officials and representatives of teachers’ organisations participated in the discussions on curriculum reforms held here.

Protests

Vocational higher secondary teachers protested in front of the Government Guesthouse here on Monday against what they termed a move to integrate the vocational higher secondary stream with the Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI). Representatives of various teachers’ organisations, who arrived at the guesthouse to submit a memorandum, were not allowed to meet the Education Minister. They later held a demonstration in front of the guesthouse.

The teachers urged the government not to go ahead with the proposal to integrate the vocational higher secondary education with the DPI.
