Opposition, ruling fronts trade charges

Debate centres around controversy surrounding HMT land deal

Opposition criticises role of Ministers in land deal

Aluva MLA defends land deal

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ruling and Opposition fronts on Monday traded charges against one another, with the HMT land deal being the fulcrum, on the first day of the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s Address in the Assembly.

While the Opposition members tried to corner the government on the HMT land deal by pointing out the alleged complicity of Ministers in regularising the deal in favour of a Mumbai-based realtor company, the ruling front members defended the deal which, they said, was in the larger interests of industrial development in the State. The ruling front members also tried to expose the chinks in the Opposition’s campaign against price rise by pointing out the UPA government’s decision to hike petroleum prices, besides cutting ration allocation.

The three-day debate began with CPI member N. Anirudhan moving the motion of thanks.

The CPI member listed the LDF government’s achievements in various sectors, “which had rectified the wrong policies and misplaced priorities of the previous UDF Government.” The Opposition was led by G. Karthikeyan, K.C. Venugopal, Joseph M. Puthussery, and K.K. Shaju, among others. The ruling front put up P. Jayarajan, K.K. Shylaja, A.M. Yusuf, T.P.A. Rahim, besides Mr. Anirudhan.

Mr. Venugopal asked the government to take steps to recover excess land which had been allegedly usurped by a CPI(M)-controlled cooperative body.

The most spirited defence on behalf of the LDF came from Aluva MLA A.M. Yusuf who said that 90 per cent of his constituents supported the Cybercity project. He alleged that the current agitation against the sale of HMT land and the project was being led by outside elements.
